Well we visited the Dry Tortugas National Park again this year and while snorkeling I made a new friend. I found myself out in the ocean with a 6 foot Nurse Shark.
I always thought I would be scared to death if I ever came upon one in the wild (as opposed to the one in the aquarium), but surprisingly it was an amazing experience!
This shark was very calm and slow moving. However, I am sure if we had bothered it, he would have turned and become more aggressive towards us. We did approach it slowly and it moved to get away from us twice and finally swam out into the open ocean and away from us.

You know when I was younger I fought with my siblings, just as we all did. Then as we started to grow up, I told on them for smoking or doing things they shouldn't be doing even though I had done the same if not worse. It seems like a blink of the eyes and we are all grown up and we are all living in different areas of the country. We have our own lives. We have our own goals and struggles in life. We have all suffered losses and we have all carved out our own little niches. For the most part we have all triumphed over evil and we have survived without life long afflictions.
The one thing we don't have is enough time spent together.
I love and miss you all.
Kim, Brandy and Summer!
Your Brother, Derek

One of my best friends, Tommy Cameron, visited Austin, TX and had this photo taken of him standing with the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue for me.
Tommy is, himself, a great guitar player and accomplished song writer. He enjoys playing the casinos in Las Vegas and can be seen just about any night at one club or another ripping up the stage with songs from all genres. If you ever get a chance to see him perform, make sure you take the time to meet him. Tell him Derek Rayburn sent you and he will treat you to an amazing show and a great evening of friendship.
With both of us sharing a love of music, we both appreciated our individual visits to see the SRV Statue. I asked him to send me a photo because when I visited back in 2002 I didn't have a camera with me.
Thanks Tommy!

A few years ago my sweet cousin, Candice, was getting married. We all traveled to Florida for the wedding. While sitting at the hotel for a few days, Glen Meadows and I played around with some music I had written and together we wrote the words for a Wedding Day song for Candice. We had planned on playing it at the reception as a little token of our love for her but I broke a string just as we were finishing up the song. About a week after the wedding, we gathered in my home studio and recorded the song with several other family members and friends pitching in for various instruments and backing vocals. I created a professional CD with fold out booklet and various versions of the song and we presented it to Candice.
She cried.
Of course this little song will always be special to those involved. Glen and I hope you enjoy it just the same.

A couple of years ago, childhood friends, Mark Lintz and Richard Yoder stopped by my home studio to play a few tunes and see what we could come up with. Mark had written a song called, "I'll Fly Away" and we spent about 5 hours recording it.
This is a very rough mix and needs about another five to ten hours of work but take a listen and if you like it, give Mark a comment over on his myspace site: http://www.myspace.com/mysticrhythms2002

A stranger was seated next to a little girl
on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said, 'Let's talk.
I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with
your fellow passenger.'
The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, 'What would you like to talk about?'
'Oh, I don't know,' said the stranger. 'How about nuclear power?' and he smiles.
'OK,
' she said. 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a
question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff -
grass - . Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a
flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you
suppose that is?'
The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, 'Hmmm, I have no idea.'
To which the little girl replies, 'Do you really feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?

Sitting on top of the world
Garrison Keillor
November 12, 2008
Be
happy, dear hearts, and allow yourselves a few more weeks of quiet
exultation. It isn't gloating, it's satisfaction at a job well done.
He was a superb candidate, serious, professorial but with a flashing
grin and a buoyancy that comes from working out in the gym every
morning. He spoke in a genuine voice, not senatorial at all. He
relished campaigning. He accepted adulation gracefully. He brandished
his sword against his opponents without mocking or belittling them. He
was elegant, unaffected, utterly American, and now (Wow) suddenly
America is cool. Chicago is cool. Chicago!!!
We threw the
dice and we won the jackpot and elected a black guy with a Harvard
degree, the middle name Hussein and a sense of humor—he said, "I've got
relatives who look like Bernie Mac, and I've got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher."
The French junior minister for human rights said, "On this morning, we
all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding
before our eyes." When was the last time you heard someone from France say they wanted to be American and take a bite of something of ours? Ponder that for a moment.
The
world expects us to elect pompous yahoos, and instead we have us a
47-year-old prince from the prairie who cheerfully ran the race, and
when his opponents threw sand at him, he just smiled back. He'll be
the first president in history to look really good making a jump shot.
He loves his classy wife and his sweet little daughters. At the same
time, he knows pop music, American lit and constitutional law. I just
can't imagine anybody cooler.
It feels good to be cool, and
all of us can share in that, even sour old right-wingers and embittered
blottoheads. Next time you fly to Heathrow and hand your passport to the man with the badge, he's going to see "United States of America" and look up and grin.
Even
if you worship in the church of Fox, everyone you meet overseas is
going to ask you about Obama, and you may as well say you voted for him
because, my friends, he is your line of credit over there. No need
anymore to try to look Canadian.
Thank you Paulina and David for sending me this and thank you for showing us the ropes while we humbly participated in this great campaign.

I am proud to be a life long democrat forming my opinion early in the
Reagan era. I have never fallen victim to the biased media outlets
that have all but publicly announced their chosen political stance. I
have always been true to the party that has always been true to my
heart even when particular party members have failed on individual
issues from time to time, simply proving their human nature is the same
as any, regardless of political devotion. I feel in my heart and with
total conviction that the Demoratic party has always had the most
common sense approach, moral and ethical responsibilities to my fellow
man, my state, my nation, and responsible directives towards our
world's diverse cultures and the committed betterment of the world for
our future generations to come. I am saddened by those that truly
believe there is an acceptable alternate solution to the grand
picture. However, the leadership of the Democratic party has time and
time again proven the best reaction to any diverse situation is always
respect and to that, I do respect my opponents and their choices in
life.
God Speed and may the victory go to the leader of the common people.
