Politics
Sitting on top of the world
Garrison Keillor
November 12, 2008
Be
happy, dear hearts, and allow yourselves a few more weeks of quiet
exultation. It isn't gloating, it's satisfaction at a job well done.
He was a superb candidate, serious, professorial but with a flashing
grin and a buoyancy that comes from working out in the gym every
morning. He spoke in a genuine voice, not senatorial at all. He
relished campaigning. He accepted adulation gracefully. He brandished
his sword against his opponents without mocking or belittling them. He
was elegant, unaffected, utterly American, and now (Wow) suddenly
America is cool. Chicago is cool. Chicago!!!
We threw the
dice and we won the jackpot and elected a black guy with a Harvard
degree, the middle name Hussein and a sense of humor—he said, "I've got
relatives who look like Bernie Mac, and I've got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher."
The French junior minister for human rights said, "On this morning, we
all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding
before our eyes." When was the last time you heard someone from France say they wanted to be American and take a bite of something of ours? Ponder that for a moment.
The
world expects us to elect pompous yahoos, and instead we have us a
47-year-old prince from the prairie who cheerfully ran the race, and
when his opponents threw sand at him, he just smiled back. He'll be
the first president in history to look really good making a jump shot.
He loves his classy wife and his sweet little daughters. At the same
time, he knows pop music, American lit and constitutional law. I just
can't imagine anybody cooler.
It feels good to be cool, and
all of us can share in that, even sour old right-wingers and embittered
blottoheads. Next time you fly to Heathrow and hand your passport to the man with the badge, he's going to see "United States of America" and look up and grin.
Even
if you worship in the church of Fox, everyone you meet overseas is
going to ask you about Obama, and you may as well say you voted for him
because, my friends, he is your line of credit over there. No need
anymore to try to look Canadian.
Thank you Paulina and David for sending me this and thank you for showing us the ropes while we humbly participated in this great campaign.

I am proud to be a life long democrat forming my opinion early in the
Reagan era. I have never fallen victim to the biased media outlets
that have all but publicly announced their chosen political stance. I
have always been true to the party that has always been true to my
heart even when particular party members have failed on individual
issues from time to time, simply proving their human nature is the same
as any, regardless of political devotion. I feel in my heart and with
total conviction that the Demoratic party has always had the most
common sense approach, moral and ethical responsibilities to my fellow
man, my state, my nation, and responsible directives towards our
world's diverse cultures and the committed betterment of the world for
our future generations to come. I am saddened by those that truly
believe there is an acceptable alternate solution to the grand
picture. However, the leadership of the Democratic party has time and
time again proven the best reaction to any diverse situation is always
respect and to that, I do respect my opponents and their choices in
life.
God Speed and may the victory go to the leader of the common people.

Why is it that the entire customer service world has taken a dedicated subscription to the, "We don't give a fuck" club?
At first I thought it was strictly those regular, everyday customer service representatives that you and I all speak to on a regular basis, you know, Sprint PCS representatives, AT&T representatives and even the guy over at Capital One that always tells you no when you try and trade in your points for air miles.
I also spent some time with my own theory revolving around my earlier
experiences in life. That because I was born with

Taxes are always a hot topic in any election, from local to federal, candidates always promote their own spin on taxes and how they will modify the tax burden on Americans. What might surprise you is just how the candidates and the party from which they hail actually interpret their promises.
Usually you hear the Republican's stating that they will reduce taxes or the least, vowing not to raise them. Even George H.W. Bush proclaimed, "Read My Lips, No New Taxes" (Wiki).
However, there is a little misunderstood fact about just how the parties handle their tax increases and decreases. Most people do not put the fact that Taxes are anything but simple along with the fact that a Tax cut doesn't necessarily mean you are the beneficiary of said Tax cut.
Let me explain:
Republicans do, in fact, usually

In Politics it seems we have fallen into a slump in this country. We are lazy and let the media dictate who we vote for. For example, if you watch CNN you more than likely vote or lean Left, if you watch FOX News, you more than likely vote or lean Right. Of course this is just a small example and in most cases religion plays a bigger part of who gets voted into office (regardless of how gay, pro-abortion or non-loyal to a marriage this "religious" candidate truely is).
A great place to start would be to turn off your TV, step away from the Bible and read the following two documents.
Republican Platform 2004
Democrat Platform 2004
Now, after you read these documents, go to the DNC and RNC web sites and read their latest published Platform statements.
After that, do some research on who gets taxed the most under which party based on historical records.

TWO TOUGH QUESTIONS:
Question 1:
If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who
were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had
syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion?
Read the next question before looking at the response for this one.

Think About It!

Our Government at one time had duties on imports - this was during the same era that Americans had a chance at working their entire life at one company and retiring with benefits. How many people do you know that have had the same job for more than 5 years?

CHEAP LABOR
Isn't that what the whole immigration issue is about?
Businesses don't want to pay a decent wage. Consumers don't want expensive products. (stop shopping at Wal-Mart people!) Government will tell you that you don't want the jobs,
But the bottom line is cheap labor.
The phrase "cheap labor" is a myth, a farce, and a lie ~ there is no
such thing as "cheap labor."
Take, for example, an illegal alien with a wife and five children.
He takes a job for $5.00 or $6.00/hour.
At that wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax, yet at the end f the year, if he files an Income Tax Return, he gets an "earned incomecredit" of up to $3,200 free.
He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent
He qualifies for food stamps
He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay) health care
His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school
He requires bilingual teachers and books
He qualifies for relief from high energy bills
If they are or become, aged, blind or disabled, they qualify for SSI.
Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicare.
All of this is at the taxpayer's expense.
He doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners nsurance.
Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.
He and his family receive the equivalent of $20.00 to $30.00/hour in benefits.
Working Americans are lucky to have $5.00 or $6.00/hour Left after paying their bills and his.
The American taxpayer's also pay for increased crime, graffiti and trash clean-up.
Cheap labor?
YEAH RIGHT!
Wake up people!
