Paula , Jamie , Brandi and I went to see Bradley Drawn Boy at The Loft in Atlanta last night (Oct. 12th, 2007).  Bradley Drawn Boy is better known as Butch Walker (on myspace ).  I prefer to see him in his "secret" shows as they are more intimate and personal.

Hold up, who is Butch Walker?  I know that most of my friends and family have heard me talk about him for over twenty years now but to many people he is either a new name or an unknown.  Well, I could go into all the details for you here, and could even tell you about my memories from back in the 80s when we would ocassionaly hang out, however, I think it is best that you visit Wiki and see what has been written about him there.  If you are a new comer to Butch Walker, please, trust me, go pick up one of his CDs.  He is a driving force in the independant music scene so you may find it best to pick his CDs up on the Internet.

Butch has always popped up under the  strangest names.  Once he and the guys from his first major band showed up at a club in Marietta, Georgia to perform their second album, Group Therapy, live for the first time under the name "Sexual Chocolate".

I am sure that it probably started as a way to get around the legalities associated with being under contract with the big major label, their strict policies and corporate ideas.  Now-a-days Butch has been so much a part of and has grown with the Internet enabled independent music industry to the point that he calls the shots on just about every aspect of his career.  At least this is the way it seems on the outside looking in.

So, my guess is, when Butch wants to get up close and personal with his fans, try out a couple of new songs and just be "himself", he picks an alternate name and pops up at a venue to the amazement of the few that are lucky enough to be in the know and to get tickets before they sell out.

Just how personal are these shows?  I hope to post a little video soon to show just how Butch invited all the fans to stand beside him, behind him and all around him and his piano as he played us a couple of songs and even gave us parts to sing with him.

How many artists do you know that have entertained, what has to amount to, millions for over twenty years, circling the globe multiple times and still has the heart to get in the middle of his fans, trust them with his life and play his heart out face to face with me, myself and Irene?

Did you hear about Butch's house burning down?SO sad...
Derek - Mglamrock Unregistered | 11-28-2007 20:23
Yes, I heard through rumors that it burnt down. I have not heard anything official (or have I went looking for official statements yet).

I am so proud of Butch. He was just one of the guys when we were kids and he broke out and made it. Every time I see him, I thank him for making me so proud that one of us made it. Music is a great love but a very difficult industry. I will always defend Butch and look up to him... he deserves more than he could ever receive from this world.

Nora is sweet and beautiful! I wish I wasn't so drunk when I was introduced to her, I would have liked to have had more of a conversation rather than a drunken, "way to go Butch!" moment.

Derek, you actually grew up with Butch? How freakin cool is that!I met him in April when he came to Montreal. I didn't think he'd ever come here. We were a really small crowd. I bought my tickets from an American site because i was so happy he was coming. He was so sweet and I got him to sign all my albums and my SOuth Gang tainted Angel.I have never met a sweeter man.
He left me with such a great feeling,He was sick and he took time to take pictures and sign autographs. The next day I drove 6 hours to Toronto to watch him again. He is so worth it! He may never come back, so I decided to go watch him again.he is absolutely amazing!I am gonna keep stoning you about him, so I'l lstop.I can talk about Butch all night!lol I hope everything is ok with him. He didn't deserve that.I am Mirella, by the way.
Derek - It's odd actually... Unregistered | 11-30-2007 05:09
It seems like a life time ago... I find myself saying that more often than I ever thought I would.

I kicked around the same circle of musicians that played from band to band back in our teenage days. Butch introduced me to Nora saying, "Derek and I used to play in rival metal bands back in the day". A band I played in, "Chastity Rose" was asked to open up for them when they did their first SouthGang show back in their home town after they signed with Virgin/Charisma. For proper credit, a band called "Big Shot" was also asked to perform at this show. We played several shows with Big Shot and it was an amazing time! Tip: Stay away from Alabama back woods strip clubs, especially those on gravel roads with Christmas lights strung up on the side of a barn. Hell we were broke but in that strip club, we were absolutely "White Trash with Cash" compared to the normal fair!

I was also proud to be called on one night when they wanted to come in out of no where and play their Group Therapy album in front of a live audience for the first time (without the label's approval if I remember correctly)... Butch brought his gear and the rest of the guys used our gear and they did a show under the name, "Sexual Chocolate".

There are many paths that those that knew him took. I took the path of stepping back and trying not to bother him and as a result lost touch with him over the years. There was this amazing but weird thing that happened when SouthGang broke out and signed a record deal... If a person in North West Georgia was alive and breathing, they claimed to know Butch and the gang.

I have a handful of really cool memories and anytime I see Butch, or for that matter any of the guys from that circle of musicians it takes me back to a place I came from. And it is wonderful.

After a very hard push in the music industry myself, I put things in perspective, realized I didn't have the level of grit and long term stinky socks in an over packed van drive to get to the good life and I "got a hair cut and got a real job". Now I am a web based software developer/graphic designer and had a short run as CEO of a 3D Software Company before the 2000 technology bust. I still have a few guitars and enjoy covering Butch's songs on those summer nights with a beer on my porch.
Derek - Back on Subject... Unregistered | 11-30-2007 05:19
So, I forgot to mention. If there is one thing I do know from my teenage years and growing up watching the progress Butch and the guys made, I know for a fact that they deserve everything they had and so much more. It is odd that we live in a society that Paris Hilton can show her poodle and be more famous than an enormously talented musician/songwriter/producer such as Butch.
Mglamrock - Hey Unregistered | 12-02-2007 18:35
Hey Derek,
I don't understand the Paris thing either. She is useless...How can an amazing artist like Butch Walker not be super famous. I must admit, I am happy to a point. He is more accessible and he really cares about his fans.Sometimes when you get too famous, you forget to have contact with the people who really love you. I am so impressed that you know him. It's nice to talk to someone who actually knows him personally. When I met him, he was so soft spoken and just genuine.I left that club feeling amazing, like I met the most wonderful person ever. He just felt real. He took the time to listen to me babble.I got so nervous! I remember asking him to promise to come back to Montreal. He looked straight into my eyes and promised. You know,I really felt like he meant it. Maybe that sounds like wishful thinking, but it just felt like he wouldn't lie. I still listen to Southgang. The album didn't even get released here.I had to buy it in the states, so it is very special to me. Thanks for talking to me. If you have any interesting news on him, keep me posted.I check your site everyday.
Have a great day,
Mirella

Mirella, I am sad to point out that I don't really "know" him anymore. We lost touch years ago. Yes, we still "know" of each other and when I see him every 5 years or so, he remembers me but that's about it.

I find out BW news just like you, by hitting his web sites... www.myspace.com/butchwalker and www.butchwalker.com (I post them here for anyone reading this that doesn't know the addresses).

I have a couple of friends that talk to him on a more regular basis but anything I hear from them, I just have to keep under my hat until he wants the world to know.

I have an old commercial from when we opened up for SouthGang. I will try to post it soon.

Thanks for visiting my little site.

Derek,
You still come from his hood, so that says something and he remembers you.You have spent time with him and opened up for Southgang. That is a cool experience. You are in 2 different worlds, but he still knows who you are,and that says something. You may not be bestfriends, but you grew up with him.I can't wait to see the commercial!Hey, thanks for adding me on myspace. Let me know when you put the commercial up.

Hellooo and i feel so blessed to have found this site! I fell in love with Butch when i saw his Joan video on his myspace site. Wow what a huge talent he is, not to mention very easy on the eyes. I love his style and after hearing his music and seeing him i have learned that it is humanly possible to be inlove with someone you have never met..so so possible. Great man, great musician and apparently great hubby and papa..curious as to did he have a boy or a girl? Having a child and doing what you love can be a little difficult but he has a great wife apparently that that does a super job p.s being a mom is like having a job with over time required! Kisses to you Derek for creating a great site here! PEACE! Moon
Derek - Secret Shows... Unregistered | 08-01-2008 23:59
From what I have seen lately, Butch has been very open about his appearances, even the secret shows. The best way to find out about these shows is to sign up for his mailing list, visit his MySpace page and keep up with is website. He will make announcements from time to time and if you can read between the lines it is usually easy to read into what he is talking about.

Recently he sent out a message about him visiting a bar to watch a "Butch Walker Tribute Band", of course if you didn't catch the hint, he was talking about showing up at a local bar the night after (or was it before) a major gig he was playing in the same city.

Although the big bad major labels have almost become a thing of the past, especially in the Butch's world, you still have situations where either out of respect for the big event or the big venue, Butch will not play under his own name on the same night, night before or night after in the same city at a local club.

I am sure you can figure out why, now go sign up for his mailing list and figure out where the next one is!

Hi Mirella, unfortunately I have been busy becoming a real estate mogul. Three houses in the bank, seven more to go, then I retire and maybe then I will have some time to get back into my home studio and make some more music.

Maybe, just maybe, if life is good to me, someday, maybe I can pull a string or two and send a song to Butch... not for his powers of production but, maybe just maybe, for his own personal enjoyment, or laughter which ever may be the case!

Funny how your dreams become so small when the real world grabs your balls and dictates what you can do by the credit score that results from your actions.

Go Butch! Keep on rockin!
Mirella - Hi Unregistered | 09-27-2008 02:46
Hi Derek,
It's been awhile for me too.I know you are working hard,so no worries. Are you going to Butch's show in Atlanta? I'd kill to go.I would consider going to NYC. I was going to the Boston show, but he cancelled.I miss him so much, I am dying to see him live again.Oh, and there is nothing wrong with "cutting your hair and getting a realjob".Butch is a lucky man to make it in the music business. You just found another creative way to make a living.Hope to talk to you soon,
Mirella
Derek - Been A While Unregistered | 08-06-2009 08:13
Mirella and all... Sorry I haven't commented back in so long. The economy put a twist in my 50 to 60 hour work week, now I find I am working around 80 to 100 hours a week. Not because I am starving but because I have starved in the past.

One of Butch's closer friends was dating my sister back when Butch played ATL last year and we were all going down to hang out with him but of course life unfortunately reared it's ugly head and I was the first to bail on the offer, then my Sister and her then boyfriend also bailed so none of us went. Sad.

There are really only a few things in life that I can do that take me to a place that is so magic that my heart comes alive and my creativity is sparked again by the dreams of old and seeing Butch life is one of those few things that triggers the wonderful chemicals in my head.

I guess I could try meth but I, unfortunately, have lost too many bethamphetamines that I have loved in life and that have been so dear to me and ultimately defined a strong part of who I am.

Mirella I have to, hopefully without offending you, correct something you stated above... Butch wasn't lucky, Butch worked his Mother Fucking ass off to get what little bit of the industry he calls his own. I used to think it was about "making it", "breaking out", "getting the deal" or being "lucky" but after 17 years of giving it all I had, I realized that I just didn't have the energy to keep pushing against the odds every day of my life to get where Butch or others are or have been. Butch is a very strong person for putting up with all he did to get what little he has...

When Michael Jackson passed recently, I felt the loss for the world and the music industry. I understand he was odd and I understand that many dislike him (Michael Jackson) especially for the accusations, however, I have to have faith in our justice system and believe that he was innocent regardless of the opinions of others. With that said, the only other thing that came to my mind was how lucky he (MJ) was compared to someone like Butch. I could be wrong but I don't think Michael Jackson has released as many albums as Butch has. I don't think Michael toured as many clubs nor do I think Michael ever lived in a van (at least as an adult entertainer).

The only thing I think they shared was the terrible experience of leaving behind fellow band mates because of an industry that wouldn't allow them to stay together. I don't know this personally but I can assume from all that I do know that while Butch may have had an itch to go solo there had to be something bigger, something possibly in writing that prevented the Marvelous from staying together in some shape or form. Those guys are brothers, I know because I still have (band mate) brothers that I will love and cherish everyday for the rest of my life.

Venni commented on the Shout page about Butch on this site so I will reply here... Yes, life does change and it is sometimes sad that we grow apart from those we once knew. I can tell you that you should keep a positive side to it all. Always look for the positive in anything that has happened even if you lost all your Master Recordings filled with hundreds of songs that never made it to your albums and have never been heard by the public to a fire in Malibu. Butch found the positive even if you hear the pain in some of his songs after that terrible event.

The amazing things that happen to us, good or bad, are the things that define us. Our wisdom is earned by those experiences and wisdom is priceless.

So on some weird night when all seems perfect be sure to have a toast, even if to yourself under your own breath, to those in your life that have fallen and to those that have reached stars you only dreamed of once in your lifetime.

Well, I am off to find my retirement money, I think I left it laying around here somewhere, if not I guess I will start another day looking for it.

Where ever you are Butch... Keep rocking and congrats on the little Walker.
Derek - You're right Mirella Unregistered | 08-06-2009 08:24
I guess you are absolutely right... I just found another way to let my creativity provide my income. Developing web sites, writing custom code, database work, etc. is all creative, at least from the perspective that I attack it. I do enjoy that Internet speeds have increased over the years because now I have my own recording studio (had to move it out of the house and into a commercial space) to not only do video and audio recordings for my commercial clients (phone tracks, radio and tv commercials, youtube commercials, etc) but now I can give some of my experience back to the younger musicians by providing a place to record at reasonable rates.

Now if someone could explain to me what the fuck I was thinking when I decided to buy rental houses, work a full time job, own a web hosting and development company AND start a recording studio all at the same time, then I will know why I find myself REQUIRING 30 hours a day just to finish my work load!

You know come to think of it, maybe I did have the energy to push as hard as Butch did! Damn it! haha j/k

Derek, I stumbled on to your site when I was searching for some Butch Info and I am so glad that I did. In my opinion everything that you have said rings true. I have been a Butch fan since I first saw the Tainted Angel video debut on Headbangers Ball (God I miss that show) oh so long ago. I live in a coal mining town in eastern PA a long long way from Atlanta, Cartersville or LA for that matter and back then without the help of the internet it was all about the magazines. Metal Edge, RIP, Circus, and to a lesser degree in my music world Rolling Stone would be the only way to get your info about what was up with the bands you loved. And I bought them all…all the time. I believe it was Metal Edge in the roundup section where I had heard that Butch, Jay and Slug were forming The Floyds…it may have been Floyds Funk Revival but I don’t think so I think it was when they were the Floyds…so of course I went nuts trying to find out all I could about them…which again as a 18 year old guy in PA…that equated to not much…

Then I read that they were forming the Marvelous 3…and even better my local record store found and ordered me Math and other Problems…I have to admit at the time I didn’t know what to expect…I mean what was it going to sound like? The sound of 80’s hair had long past, so lets just say it was a very long 2 week wait to get that call from Record Town….But I got it…and from that first listen, my true love of all things Butch has grown…from every show, to every interview, to every new song he writes and gives..?? Sometimes it seems like he gives too much…so much I feel like I know him personally…and that feeling only intensifies with every gut wrenching performance he puts on.

I guess what I am saying is that I know how you feel. I could only imagine how incredible it was to open shows for SouthGang and know the guys. But both of us have been on the SG, Butch Walker rollercoaster ride and from the sounds of it we have loved every minute of it and if you are like me can’t wait for what comes next. What I have for Butch is respect. I am 36 now…I’m not a groupie or a fanatic although some of my friends might disagree with me a little… but what I feel is lucky. Lucky to have been on this ride…lucky to have this person, even if only through his music, in my life. Too me he is what the Boss use to be and on most days still is…just one of us but with a but load of talent and just the right amount of Rock Star.

Thank you for sharing your memories and stories.

Fran, Thanks for your compliments, understanding and sharing your story. Yes, I am a big fan, not a groupie or fanatic, hell he comes to Atlanta all the time but I rarely get a chance to go see him because of work and all my side jobs. It's funny, back when I started this little post, I didn't think it would take off like it has, people commenting and such. I have promoted Butch, Marv3, Floyds, Southgang, Byte the Bullet, The Boyz and other friends/bands all my life to anyone willing to listen. Happy that Butch is starting to get the credit he deserves. Now if he could just get me a date with Taylor Swift! Not because she is talented but wow what a hot little thing!

He is finally one of the 8 larger than life size posters in the window display at my local Guitar Center store. That was great too see! Caught me off guard, I mean, stuck in traffic trying to get out of a large mall area and I look over and there is a 10 foot tall image of Butch holding a guitar reflecting across the hood of my car. Not something I expected but a great experience!
